Family : Mustelidae
Genus : Martes
Species : martes

The Pine Marten's range previously extended over most of Great Britain and Scotland, but due to hunting and habitat loss, it's range has been severely reduced. However, because of recent conservation efforts, the Pine Marten's range and population is slowly increasing. While they have become more prominent in Scotland, their population in Britain is unknown, and it is possible they may have been extirpated from the area.
The Pine Marten, or Martes martes, is a relatively large member of the Mustelidae Family, with the typical elongated body, long tail, and elongated rostrum. Males can have a body length of 54cm, while the females, who are capable of reaching the same size, are often smaller. The males can weigh as much as 2.2Kg, with the females usually half that. The fur is typically dark brown, with a cream colored throat. They are omnivorous, eating whatever fruits and animals that are available. Pine Martens are currently endangered, though they are making a comeback in some areas.
