COP 2740 is a three-credit course meeting 10 hours a week.  Completion of CGS 1570 (Computer Concepts and Applications) is required.  Course requires computer use outside of class time to complete computer assignments.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course offers students an extensive introduction to data server technology. The class covers the concepts of both relational and object relational databases and the powerful SQL programming language. Students are taught to create and maintain database objects and to store, retrieve, and manipulate data. Students learn to retrieve data by using advanced techniques such as ROLLUP, CUBE, set operators, and hierarchical retrieval. They also learn to write SQL and SQL*Plus script files using the iSQL*Plus tool to generate report- like output. Demonstrations and hands-on practice reinforce the fundamental concepts. Prepares students for Exam# 1Z0-007: Introduction to Oracle9i: SQLÔ

GRADING CRITERIA: There will be approximately eight (8) written tests, including the final examination, covering Chapters 1-16.  The 8 assignments will be equally weighted (12 points each--total possible points 96) and count as one test.  The course grade will be an average of the written tests and assignments.  The following grade scale will be used:

90 - 100 = A                70 - 76 = C

87 -   89 = B+              67 - 69 = D+

80 -   86 = B                60 - 66 = D

77 -   79 = C+             Below 60 = F

Missed tests must be made up the day after returning to class. STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SCHEDULING MAKEUP TESTS.

IMPORTANT: Students desiring to withdraw must do so before November 9. It is the student’s responsibility to submit the withdrawal paperwork as per PJC catalog. Incompletes can be given only if 70% of classwork has been completed and there is a reasonable chance of passing. See PJC catalog for withdrawal, incomplete, and attendance policies.
