CGS 1570 is a three-credit course meeting 3 hours a week. Successful completion of Microcomputer Operating Systems (CGS1560) is a prerequisite for this course. Course may require computer use outside of class time to complete computer assignments.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Fundamentals of UNIX teaches you how to use the UNIX operating system and introduces you to the Common Desktop Environment (CDE). The class is for new users of the UNIX environment and CDE. You will learn fundamental command-line features of the UNIX environment including file system navigation, file permissions, the vi text editor, command shells, and basic network use. CDE features include Applications Manager, Text Editor, printing and mail.
GRADING CRITERIA: There will be sixteen (17) tests, including the final exam. The tests will cover Chapters 1-16 from the text. The sixteen chapter tests will count as 75% of the total grade and the final will count 25%. The following grade scale will be used:
90 - 100 = A 70 - 76 = C
87 - 89 = B+ 67 - 69 = D+
80 - 86 = B 60 - 66 = D
77 - 79 = C+ Below 60 = F
MAKEUP TESTS MUST BE TAKEN THE DAY OF RETURN. Students with excessive absences will be withdrawn. See PJC catalog for attendance policy.
