Special Information Links:    1.    Computer terminology and Definitions

 

  • Using E-Mail and the threaded discussion.  You are required to post some of your assignments on the threaded discussion and email some of them to the instructor.  Ten percent of your grade in this course is determined by the quality and effectiveness of your e-mail and your participation in the threaded discussion.  Every student is required to participate in the threaded discussion. Check the threaded discussion often as the instructor may use it to address questions and provide general information to the class. Topics for discussion may be initiated by the students or the instructor.  Please note that quality is more important than quantity; there is no need to overdo the amount of messages you send.  Feel free to use this tool.
 
  • Your assignments are due on Sunday, at 11:59 p.m. each week and points will be taken off for late assignments.  Grades are posted on Monday, at 12:00 p.m. after due date.
 
  • Please send your assignments by clicking on the Bulletins  icon inside of WebCT, then select the topic posted.  Remember to reply to the main entry posted by your instructor.  Points will be taken off for not following instructions.  For more information, please download the instruction on posting your files.
  • Assignment 1 - Business, Advertising, and Online Shopping.  Value equals 3 points toward your grade in the course.

Shopping on the Web has grown rapidly and you can now buy almost anything online. Go to the Internet Literacy Web site to visit the shopping sites. Which of these sites make shopping easier? Are you more comfortable buying some products on the Web? If so, which ones?  Why? If not, Why not?  Post this assignment on the threaded discussion in WebCT. 

  • Assignment 2 - Regional and Local Networks and User Satisfaction. Value equals 3 points toward your grade in the course

    1. With the larger national online services available, why would you choose a regional/local network? Are there features available from these vendors that make a regional/local provider more appealing?

    2. Who is your Internet Service Provider? Are you satisfied with your Internet connectivity? Which factors are most important to you in selecting an ISP?

  • Assignment 3 - Netiquette Guidelines.  Value equals 3 points toward your grade in the course.

Go to the Bill of Rights and Responsibilities site by following the links in the Netiquette Guidelines section of the Internet Literacy Web site Read carefully the Bill of Rights and Responsibilities for Electronic Learners that you will find there. Give an in-depth discussion on the following questions and post this assignment on the threaded discussion in WebCT:

  1. Do you agree with all of the items covered in this Bill of Rights?  Why or why not?
  2. What do you disagree with?
  3. Do you plan to abide by these guidelines?  Why or why not?
  4. Do you think they leave out anything important?  Why or why not?
  5. What's not covered that should be? 
  • Assignment 4 - Spam.  Value equals 4 points toward your grade in the course.

    After reviewing the following sites at Internet Literacy Web site, decide how you think you'll handle spam. How important do you think it is to limit spam? What steps would you be willing to take to stop spam?  Post your answer on the threaded discussion in WebCT.  Also, respond to at least one of your classmates' answer.

  • Assignment 5 - Hoaxes.  Value equals 4 points toward your grade in the course.

Have you ever received e-mail spreading one or more of these hoaxes at the sites listed at Internet Literacy Web site?  If so, give some examples.  How would you decide if the information was true or a hoax?  Post your answer on the threaded discussion in WebCT.  Also, respond to at least one of your classmates' answer.

  • Assignment 6 - Emoticons.  Value equals 3 points toward your grade in the course.

    The sites at Internet Literacy Web site provide lots of ways to express yourself using a special shorthand. Go to one or more of the sites you'll find in the Emoticons section and browse the list of emoticons you will find there. Post your answer to the following questions on the threaded discussion in WebCT:

    1. What are your favorite emoticons?  List them and explain what they mean.

    2. What emoticons do you find too esoteric (that is, too hard to understand) for general use on the Internet?   List them and explain what they mean.

  • Assignment 7 - Three Letter Acronyms (TLAs) and Jargon.  Value equals 4 points toward your grade in the course.
    1. TLA

  • Go to the TLAs section of the Internet Literacy Web site and click the link to browse the TLA files as hypertext, and scroll down to the Ts. In the section on talk, browse the list of three-letter acronyms.  Which TLAs do you think an Internet Literate person should know?  List them and explain what they mean.
  • Which ones are too esoteric for general use on the Internet?  List them and explain what they mean.  Post this assignment on the threaded discussion in WebCT.
  1. Jargon
  • Go to the Jargon section of the Internet Literacy Web site and click the link to browse the jargon files at the sites. Which of this jargon has already found its way into common usage?
  • Which seems far too technical to ever become common?
  • Assignment 8 - How to Avoid Catching Viruses from E-mail Attachments .  Value equals 5 points toward your grade in the course.
  1. E-mail Client: Chapter 6 in the Internet Literacy textbook describes several e-mail clients that you can use to do electronic mail.  Post this assignment on the threaded discussion in WebCT. 

    1. List at least three e-mail clients.
    2. What is your personal e-mail address?
    3. How will you e-mail your instructor in this course? 
  2. Computer Viruses: Visit the sites listed at Internet Literacy Web site and post your answer to the following questions:

    1. Find a good definition of a computer virus and provide a brief description of at least four different virus categories.
    2. What is an anti-virus program?
    3. What which method will you employ to keep from catch viruses?

You can also find information about the latest viruses at http://www.symantec.com/resource.htm and http://vil.mcafee.com/ among other sites. Post this assignment on the threaded discussion in WebCT. 

  • Assignment 9 - Download An Audio File And A Graphic File.  Value equals 4 points toward your grade in the course.

Perform an Internet search to find an audio file and a graphic file that you can use in your web page.  Cite the source in APA, MLA, or CMS style and post it in Bulletin Board. Send the audio and graphic files as attachments.

  • Assignment 10 - Free Clip Art & Audio Files.  Value equals 4 points toward your grade in the course.

Perform an Internet search to find at least three (3) web sites that host free clip art and/or free audio files. Share your result and URLs with the class in threaded discussion.

  • Assignment 11 - Résumé.  Value equals 10 points toward your grade in the course.

After completing Chapter 18 you should be able to do your Résumé. Follow some of the links at Internet Literacy Web site to see a variety of resume formats.

  1. You need to test your resume first to make sure it looks good and contains no spelling errors nor broken links.

  2. Remember that your resume should contain a table of contents to targets that make it easy for the user to find the different sections of your resume and use "Back to the Top" hyperlink at the end of each section to return to the table of contents.

  3. You should save the resume on your ISP's server and post the URL on the threaded discussion in WebCT.

  • Assignment 12 - Critique - What Is Wrong With This Page? - Value equals 3 points toward your grade in the course.

After reading the chapters in the book and the articles on Web page design and layout, take a look at one of these obnoxious web sites and list at least three (3) thing done wrong on this page.  Post your comment in the threaded discussion.

  • Assignment 13 - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.  Value equals 5 points toward your grade in the course.

Perform an Internet search to find at least three web sites, one for each category, which is good, or bad, or ugly.  Send the URL of the web sites to the threaded discussion and explain why you think it is good, or bad, or ugly.

  • Assignment 14 - Favorite Shockwave Feature.  Value equals 3 points toward your grade in the course.

After you have installed the Shockwave plug-in, use your browser to visit some of the shockwave-enabled Web sites you will find at http://www.macromedia.com/shockzone and post this assignment on the threaded discussion in WebCT. 

  1. Make a list of Shockwave features that you find  on most of web pages that use them.

  2. What is your favorite shockwave feature?

  • Assignment 15 - Home Page.  Value equals 20 points toward your grade in the course.

After completing Chapter 21 you should be able to do your home page. 

  1. You need to test your home page first to make sure it looks good and contains no spelling errors and no broken links.

  2. Your home page should contain hyperlinks, background color, graphics, sound, and/or animations. One of the links should link to your resume created in Assignment 7.

  3. Send the URL of your home page to WebCT after you have your home page saved on your ISP's server.

    1. Remember to make the URL of your home page a hyperlink, so your classmates can click on the link and view your homepage on your ISP's server.

    2. To get to WebCT Homepage, just click on Homepage icon on the WebCT main page.

  4. Also, send the URL of your homepage to the threaded discussion in WebCT.

  • Assignment 16 - Audio On Your Home Page.  Value equals 4 points toward your grade in the course.
  1. Complete exercises 1 through 3 at the end of Chapter 24, which has you put audio onto your home page.

  2. After you have tested the audio on your Web page to make sure it plays back properly from the Web, post a message with your URL on the threaded discussion indicating that your web page now has audio so your classmates can click and view your homepage and your instructor can assign a grade for your waveform recording.  

  • Assignment 17 - Review One of Your Classmate's Homepage.  Value equals 4 points toward your grade in the course.

Review one of your classmate's homepage assigned to you.  Use WebCT to email him/her suggestions as to what he/she should do to improve his/her page. Also email a copy of  your suggestions to your instructor in WebCT.

  • Assignment 18 - Evaluate Submitted Web Pages.  Value equals 4 points toward your grade in the course.
    List what you think are the top three Web Pages and why you liked them. Winners will be announced at the end of the term on the threaded discussion.  E-mail this assignment to your instructor in WebCT.
