Last Week's Lesson | Next Week's Lesson

What We Did Last Week

In Project 2, you created and ran a variety of queries. You saw how to select fields in a query. You used text data and wildcards in criteria. You also used comparison operators in criteria involving numeric data. You combined criteria with both AND and OR. You saw how to sort the results of a query, how to join tables, and how to restrict the records in a join. You created computed fields and calculated statistics. You learned how to use grouping as well as how to save a query for future use.

Microsoft Office 2003 Teacher and Student version does not come with Access. If you have Teacher and Student version and need Access, you can pick up a copy of Microsoft Office 2003 Professional 30-day trial CD from me. Make sure to finish all your work within 30 days before it expires.

We will continue to work on Access 2003 this week. Please do not hesitate to call or email me if you have any questions.  You can also make an appointment to come to my office if you need help on your course.

What You Will Learn This Week

In Project 3, you will learn how to maintain a database. You will see how to use Form view to add records to a table. You will learn how to locate and filter records. You will see how to change the contents of records in a table and how to delete records from a table. You will restructure a table, both by changing field characteristics and by adding a new field. You will see how to make changes to groups of records and how to delete groups of records. You will learn how to create a variety of validation rules to specify a required field, specify a range, specify a default value, specify legal values, and specify a format. You will examine the issues involved in updating a table with validation rules. You also will see how to specify referential integrity. You will learn how to view related data by using subdatasheets. You will learn how to order records. Finally, you will see how to improve performance by creating single-field and multiple-field indexes.

  • Lesson 17: Publishing to the Internet Using Data Access Pages

In this Web feature, you will create a data access page for the Customer table in the Alisa Vending Services database. To do so, you will use the Page Wizard. You then will see how to view the data access page from within access. Finally, you will see how to use the data access page.

Activities for This Week

  • Reading Assignment - Maintaining a database using the design and update features of Access, and publishing to the Internet using Data Access Page in your Access 2003 textbook.

  • Assignment #9, Part 3 -  Maintaining a Database Using the Design and Update Features of Access

Email your completed assignment to your instructor at llemley@pjc.edu. There should be only one attachment (Birds2U.mdb) with 6 files saved in the database. Remember to type "Your Section #, Assignment 9, Your Name" in the Subject.

  • MSLQ survey - You are selected to be in a research study to determine how motivation and use of learning strategies influence performance. You will be asked to complete a survey consisting of demographical information and questions correlating to motivation orientation and cognitive/metacognitive learning strategies. Here is more information concerning the survey. Please go to WebCT to answer the MSLQ survey. Remember to answer all questions and save each one of them before submitting your survey. Thank you in advance for your participation.

Troubleshooting -
