What We Did Last Week

We learned the Microsoft Windows XP graphical user interface last week.  In part 1, you launched Windows XP, logged on to the computer, learned the parts of the desktop, and learned to point, click, right-click, doubled-click, drag, and right-drag.  You also learned to open, minimize, maximize, restore, and close a Windows XP windows, as well as learned how to launch an application.  Using the table of contents, Index, Search, and Favorites, you learned to obtain Help about Microsoft Windows XP and bookmark important Help topics.  You logged off from the computer using the Log Off Command on the Start menu and then shut down Windows XP using the Turn off computer link on the Welcome screen. In part 2, you had a brief overview on Office 2003 Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

I have created our class activity page with your picture and IM screen name.  Visit the page and get to know your classmates.  Find your study buddies so you can help each other go through this course.

Test #1 is scheduled on Monday, September 12 at 6 p. m. in room 2146. You can also make an appointment with any of the test centers to take the test. Test will be available at the test centers from Monday to Friday during their testing hours. You have to have your SAM username and password to take the test. Please email me if you did not get them at the orientation.

You have to have access to Office 2003 to do your assignments You can purchase Office Professional 2003 at www.efollett.com for $199--a considerable saving over retail price. Phone is 1-800-874-9001. Or you can purchase it at www.campustech.com for  $168.65 or at http://www.gradware.com for $179.95.

For those of you don't have Office 2003 and don't plan to purchase one, you can download Office Standard Edition 2003 at Microsoft Web site http://www.microsoft.com/office/trial/default.mspx. You also need to order a free 30-day evaluation copy of Office Professional 2003 CD since the Standard Edition does not include Access. However, don't install the 30-day trial CD till we get to Access.

Please do not hesitate to call or email me if you have any questions.  You can also make an appointment and come to my office if you need help with your course work.  We are going to spend three weeks to learn Microsoft Word.  So have fun exploring Word!
