What We Did Last Week

We did learning style test last week.  Did the result shock you?  You can find some learning tips based on your learning style in the section below.  Knowing your learning style can help you find your best way to study and to learn.  I hope all of you had fun doing it last week.

I have created our class activity page with your picture and IM screen name.  Visit the page and get to know your classmates.  Find your study buddies so you can help each other go through this course.

Most of you finished last week's activities.  Please find out your current status from the check list.  You can still do the activities this week, if you have not done so.  Please refer back to last week's lesson for more instruction. If you have no access to a digital camera, you can go to computer lab in Building 21 to have your digital picture taken and don't forget to tell the staff who you are.

Some of you sent your assignment 1 to the wrong place. Assignments 1 - 10 on Concepts, Windows XP, Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint should be sent to my PJC account at llemley@pjc.edu as attachments with "Section #, Assignment #, Your name" typed in the Subject box. Only your biography in Threaded Discussion (Bulletin Board) is done in WebCT.

I received email from some of you concerning the loading problem of the Interactive Labs. The department is well aware of it and had contacted the publisher.  Hopefully, the problem will be fixed soon. Meanwhile, you can bring a blank CD to the computer lab to make a copy of the Interactive Labs. Tell the staff in the booth that you are my online student. They will help you if you don't know how to copy a CD.

By the way, some of you had questions on SAM2003You have to have an account with http://sam2003.course.com to use SAM in this course and take your exams. Here is how:

  1. Install the SAM2003 CD you received at the orientation.
  2. Click on the SAM2003 icon on the desktop to go to http://sam2003.course.com.
  3. Enter your username (pjc followed by three digits) and password (your section number followed by two digits) to login. Do not login as a new user.  Please contact me if you don't have your username and password.
  4. Select any Training from the assignment list to launch training.
  5. You will see a list of 5 exams at the beginning of the listing. Do not select any exam. They are the actual exams you are going to take for this term. Click on Exam only when you are ready to take the tests on Windows XP, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access at the test center.

In Training, you can access Prepare, Observe, Practice, and Apply at any time, moving among them in any order to create the learning program that best suits you. You can also access any learning mode as many times as you like. The real test is very much similar to the test you take using Apply mode in Training.

SAM2003 is a great learning and assessment tool.  It includes all the skills you should master to pass the Microsoft MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) exam. However, the real test will only include the tasks you learned in your textbook.

Some of you have not received your SAM2003 CD yet. I left the SAM2003 CD in the computer lab in Building 21 (across street from Best Buy). You can come any day from Monday to Thursday (from 8 am to 9 pm), Friday (from 8 am to 2 pm) and Saturday (from 8 am to 4 pm) to pick up the CD. Just go to the booth and tell the staff who you are and what you need. They will give the CD and your username and password to you.

You will need your SAM username and password to login to SAM Web site. Once you login, practice test is located under Training. You need to remember your username and password because you will also need them to take your online exams. Please email me if you don't have your username and password.

We are going to work on Microsoft Word next week. You have to have access to Office 2003 to do your assignments You can purchase Office Professional 2003 at www.efollett.com for $199--a considerable saving over retail price. Phone is 1-800-874-9001. Or you can purchase it at www.campustech.com for  $168.65 or at http://www.gradware.com for $179.95.

For those of you don't have Office 2003 and don't plan to purchase one, you can download Office Standard Edition 2003 at Microsoft Web site http://www.microsoft.com/office/trial/default.mspx. You also need to order a free 30-day evaluation copy of Office Professional 2003 CD since the Standard Edition does not include Access. However, don't install the 30-day trial CD till we get to Access.

Please do not hesitate to call or email me if you have any questions.  You can also make an appointment and come to my office if you need more instruction on starting your course.  Of course, you can always catch me online using Instant Messenger.  My screen name is yclemley

We are going to work on Windows XP and Office 2003 this week and you will be tested on both chapters in your book.  Test #1 is scheduled on Monday, September 12 at 6 p. m. in Room 2146. You can also take the test at any one of the PJC test centers during the week from Monday to Friday during their testing hours. Make sure to call ahead and make an appointment. Monday night test is set up for people who work during the day and can't go to the test center.
