Last Week's Lesson | Next Week's Lesson

What We Did Last Week

We had our orientation last week and went over our course Web site, course syllabus, and learned to set up your myWebCT account and added this course to your myWebCT.  We had fun at the orientation. Now, go to know your classmates and you can find their pictures and biographies on the Meet Your Classmates page.

Here are what you need to do before you can start the course:

  • Create your myWebCT account and enter the course - To enter this course, use your last name followed by your first initial and followed by the last four digits of your social security number as your username and the last four digits of your social security number as your password to login to WebCT, all in lower case without any space. For example, Mary Jones's login username is jonesm6789 and password is 6789. Remember to change your password after your initial login.

  • Tour the course Web site - Syllabus, Calendar, Assignments, Resources, and FAQ.  You can find your weekly lesson from the Calendar page by clicking on the date of the week.

  • Learn to post your files in WebCT

  • Learning Style Inventory Test - Take the learning style inventory test to assess your learning styles.

  • Email your Instructor - Use WebCT to email your learning style inventory test results (scores and percentages on Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic) to your instructor.

  • Biography & Photo,  and Your Email Address and IM Screen Name- Post your biography in the Bulletin Board in WebCT and send your digital photo as an attachment. Also, please remember to include your personal email address and AOL Instant Messenger screen name.  You can click on the discussion topics posted by your instructor and post your messages by replying to your instructor's main message.

We talked about Trillian at the orientation. It is a universal messenger combines all popular chat systems into one program. Trillian simplifies your chat as well as your desktop and system resources by letting you simultaneously connect with the five most popular chat clients on the Web: Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ, mIRC, and AIM, and adds encryption support for DCC chat. By importing your passwords, buddy lists, various client preferences, and other chat specifics into its own simple interface, Trillian acts as a single hub for all your chat traffic. Trillian is completely free, with no ads and no spyware. Click the link Trillian > Download Now! to download.

We also talked about using chat in WebCT. You must have Java enabled in your browser to use chat. To have Java Virtual Machine installed on your computer, you need to first, install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1a) on your computer and then download and install Java virtual machine from Sun Microsystems.

You should obtained the SAM2003 CD at the orientation. You also should have your username and password to access SAM. You will need all of them to take your tests. If you did not get the CD and your username and password, you need to come to my office to pick them up or email me for the username and password. Also, you can pick up the SAM2003 CD from the booth in computer lab located in Building 21. Just tell the staff who you are and you are there to pick up the CD. I also left the Interactive Lab CD with the staff in the booth. You can  bring a blank CD to the lab and make a copy of the CD.

Again, I want to emphasize that you have to have access to Windows XP and Office 2003 to take this class. If you don't have Office 2003 and would like to get Office 2003, you can go to Circuit City, Best Buy, Office Max, Office Depot, or Wal-Mart to buy one for $149.99.

For those of you don't have Office 2003 and don't plan to purchase one, you can download Office Standard Edition 2003 at http://www.microsoft.com/office/trial/default.mspx. You also need to order a free 30-day evaluation copy of Office Professional 2003 CD since the Standard Edition does not include Access. However, don't install the 30-day trial CD till we get to Access.

Please do not hesitate to call or email me if you have any questions.  You can also make an appointment and come to my office if you need more instructions on setting up your WebCT account.

We have a lot of fun activities for this week.  However, it is important to post your files in WebCT correctly.  You can download the instruction (562 K in Word format) and save it on your disk.  It contains step-by-step instruction to post your weekly assignments in the bulletin board (threaded discussions).

Have fun discovering your computer!
