Requirements to begin ACT 1 course:

-Know all program policies - page 23 due on your first day of Animal Care Tech I

-Lifting/Negative TB requirement-page 24 due on your first day of Animal Care Tech I. Note that it will take several days to get your TB test given and read, so plan ahead!

-Wear uniform shirt (order today, distributed first day of class) and name badge obtained through PJC bookstore

-Students without above preparations receive grade deduction and students may not attend zoo sessions until these are completed resulting in absence deductions

 

ZooTech Policies:

 

Review Manual: policies and procedures critical to remaining a zootech student.

 

ZooTech Program Schedule (subject to change):

 

First semester = general education at PJC plus Intro to Zookeeping lab (at PJC and animal facilities)

Second semester = 50% at PJC, 50% at zoo

Summer semesters= PJC plus field trip seminars to zoos around SE U.S.

Fifth semester = 50% at PJC, 50% at animal facilities

Final semester = first half Pensacola, second half at Chehaw Wild Animal Park


 

Graduate Opportunities:

 

PJC Advanced Technical Certificate specialties available in:

1.  Elephant Biology & Management (5 weeks at Jacksonville Zoo)

2.  Zoo Research (statistics plus 2 weeks at Lubee in Gainesville and 4 weeks at Zoo Atlanta)

3.  Herpetology (statistics plus 5 weeks at Kentucky Reptile Zoo)

4.  International Zoological Experience (6 weeks in Zambia)

 

Articulation program with UWF -- B.S. degree in Interdisciplinary Sciences, Zoo Science option

Career:

Grads placed nationally with zoos, breeders, vet offices (NOT a vet tech program)

Average starting zookeeper pay $18,000 (range min. wage to $30K to start)
