Grading:

Tests (5) - 100 pts ea;   Homework - 150 pts total;   Final Exam - 150 pts.
Refer to the Student Progress Worksheet for grading specifics.

I will drop your lowest Test score - excluding Test 5.  If you miss a Test, then that is the score that is automatically dropped.  No makeups allowed on the second (or more) Test missed.
If you fail to show up for the Final Exam, I will record a zero (0) for your score.

Improving a Test score
You may replace any one (1) in-class Test score (except Test 5) with your score on the corresponding MyMathLab Test.  Additional Information

Grading Scale
A: 90 - 100%    B+: 85 - 89%   B: 80 - 84%   C+: 75 - 79%    C: 70 - 74%
D+: 65 - 69%    D: 60 - 64%     F: 0 - 59%

Homework:

Do the textbook problems and worksheets assigned on the Homework Problems Handout. Show your work to earn credit! The answers to the odd problems are listed in the back of the book so that you can check your work.  Copying the answers from the back of the book to your homework is cheating (see Standards of Conduct below).  Homework is due in class on Test day.

If you miss a Homework deadline (the day of the Test), the deadline for turning in your late Homework is the day of the next Test - failure to turn in your late Homework by that deadline will result in a zero.  If you miss a Test for a legitimate reason, and turn in your Homework & Extra Credit upon returning to class, I will not count that as being late.

LATE PENALTY: I will only accept up to 30 Homework points being late. You will not receive credit for late Homework in excess of 30 points.

Homework:  with hyperlinks ,   pdf version

Extra Credit:

Turn in a MyMathLab Quiz, a Research Report, a Picture using GRAPH, a hand-drawn Picture using the graphing template, or other listed assignment - 5 pts. per assignment.  Additionally, you can do the Chapter 6 Worksheet for Extra Credit - 10 pts.
Extra Credit work may not be turned in late.
Refer to Projects for directions and examples.

Attendance:

Attend ALL classes.  If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what work you missed.  I take roll and use the guidelines outlined in the current catalog.  If you arrive late, check with me at the end of class so as not to be listed as absent (3 tardies = 1 absence).  I may withdraw you for missing more than 3 classes (2 classes for the night class).

Misc:
  • AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT: Any student whose disabilities fall within the ADA must inform the instructor at the beginning of the term of any special need or equipment necessary to accomplish the requirements for this course. I encourage students with disabilities to speak with Disability Support Services (DSS) about accommodations they might need to help assure success in this class.

  • STANDARDS OF CONDUCT: The commission of or the attempt to commit any cheating and/or plagiarism are in violation of the Standard of Conduct and may be disciplined by an "F" on the quiz/test/exam, an "F" in the course, and up to and including suspension and expulsion from PJC.  Copying the answers from the back of the book to your homework is cheating.

  • The Texas Instruments TI-84 (preferred) or the TI-83 Plus is the required graphing calculator in this class. You'll use it everyday in class, on homework, and on tests.

  • Be Courteous. Please arrive on time in class. If you have an emergency and must leave in the middle of class, please do so quietly.

  • Be Respectful. As instruction is presented, feel free to ask any pertinent questions that arise. However, please refrain from any unnecessary talking in class, as it disturbs me and the other students sitting around you.  Repeated unnecessary talking and chit-chat in class will result in you being asked to leave the class.  Disruptive behavior is not allowed in the class.

  • Actively participate in class.

  • Please turn off all cell phones (silent mode is OK) when you are in class.  No texting in class.  Use of cell phones is prohibited while taking Tests.

  • Per the Instructional Affairs Council:
"PJC provides an institutional email account to all credit students. Pirate Mail is the official method of communication, and students must use Pirate Mail when communicating with the College. In cases where companion software is used for a particular class, emails may be exchanged between instructor and student using the companion software."
