Since this is a prep course, no D's or F's are given (unless this is your 3rd attempt in the course). If the student does not meet the requirements to earn a "C" or better, an "N" is given, meaning "No Credit."  Refer to the Student Progress Worksheet for grading specifics. PDF , Excel

Tests:   I plan to give 5 Tests. I will drop your lowest test score. If you miss a test, then that is the score that is automatically dropped. In general, I do not give make-up tests.

Homework:

Work the problems at the end of each section & worksheets listed on the Homework Problems Handout. Start each new section on a separate piece of paper, however, you may use both sides of the paper for a given section. Place the Chapter and Section Number of the assignment in the upper right-hand corner of each page (i.e. Section 1.1, Section 1.2, etc.). The answers to the odd problems are listed in the back of the book so that YOU can check your homework.  Since the answers are given, you must Show Your Work to earn credit. Homework will be collected periodically and graded for completion.  Each assignment is worth 2 points. Additional homework assignments may be assigned. LATE PENALTY: I usually do not deduct points from the 1st late Assignment; however, I may deduct 10 pts. from each of your subsequent late Assignments.

Quizzes:   6 Cumulative MathXL Quizzes, accessed via the Internet, are given throughout the course. I will take your 5 highest quiz scores. Observe the deadlines.

Exit Test:
  • Students must pass the course and pass the Exit Test in order to move on to the next level course - MAT 1033 Intermediate Algebra.
  • If a student is not passing the course at the end of the term prior to taking the Exit Test, then he/she will not be allowed to sit for the Exit Test during the final exam period. More specifically, in order to be eligible to sit for the Exit Test, then prior to taking the Exit Test, you must have a 70% or higher average.
  • If a student does not pass the Exit Test on the first attempt (70% or above), then he/she will be given an opportunity for a Retake of the Exit Test.
  • If a student does not pass the departmental Exit Test (or the Exit Test Retake), then either College Prep Algebra must be repeated or the student must retake an acceptable placement test and attain an appropriate score before the student can register for the next course (MAT1033 - Intermediate Algebra).
  • Students are NOT allowed to use a calculator on the Exit Test
  • For more information, refer to the Grading Policy For Exit Course

Extra Credit:

Chapter Tests: You may work the Chapter Test at the end of each chapter (the problems assigned on the Homework Problems Handout).
Sample Tests: For additional extra credit, you may also download the sample tests from my web site and turn in the completed sample tests with your homework. Show your work.
Points: Extra credit assignments are worth 2 points each. Extra Credit points are added to your homework scores.

Attendance:

Attend ALL classes.  If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what work you missed.  I take roll and use the guidelines outlined in the current catalog.  If you arrive late, check with me at the end of class so as not to be listed as absent (3 tardies = 1 absence).

Misc:
  • AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT: Any student whose disabilities fall within the ADA must inform the instructor at the beginning of the term of any special need or equipment necessary to accomplish the requirements for this course. I encourage students with disabilities to speak with Disability Support Services (DSS) about accommodations they might need to help assure success in this class. Contact Information: Dr. James Nickles, 484-1637, JNickles@pjc.edu, Pensacola Campus - Building 6.

  • STANDARDS OF CONDUCT: The commission of or the attempt to commit any cheating and/or plagiarism are in violation of the Standard of Conduct and may be disciplined by an "F" on the quiz/test/exam, an "F" in the course, and up to and including suspension and expulsion from PJC.

  • Be Courteous. Please arrive on time in class. If you have an emergency and must leave in the middle of class, please do so quietly.

  • Be Respectful. As instruction is presented, feel free to ask any pertinent questions that arise. However, please refrain from any unnecessary talking in class, as it disturbs me and the other students sitting around you.  Repeated unnecessary talking and chit-chat in class will result in you being asked to leave the class, and/or being withdrawn from the class.  Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated in the class.

  • Please turn off all cell phones (silent mode is OK) when you are in class.

  • PJC policy disallows visitors in the labs or classrooms.  Only registered students may use the facilities.  Students may not bring children, spouses, friends, etc. to class.
