Catalog Description: |
College Study Skills is designed to assist students in developing effective study habits that will help them to experience success in college. The student will learn to improve test-taking skills, take good lecture notes, increase reading comprehension, use a text book effectively, organize time, set realistic goals, and increase self-confidence. |

Specific Performance Objectives: At the completion of this course, the student will be able to (but not be limited to): I. List and discuss the attributes of a successful student and how he/she is responsible for his/her experience in college. II. Match resources that are available on campus that can assist students with concerns, problems related to health, academics, personal relationships, course changes, work, financial aid, etc. III. Use the P.J.C. catalog and other resources to locate information regarding attendance, class expectations, grades, withdrawals, graduation, etc. IV. List and describe specific methods to: 1. Improve ability to recall information 2. Manage time more effectively 3. Read a textbook with improved retention 4. Prepare for and take tests 5. Take effective notes 6. Listen, for comprehension, to a lecture V. List several guidelines for making effective plans that help guarantee success. VI. Describe and utilize an effective model of communication, both written and oral. VII. Interact in small groups reporting college problems, frustrations and successes. VIII. Examine personal ideas and decisions regarding issues typically faced by college students such as budgeting time, personal relationships, teacher-student relationships, etc. IX. Investigate, research a career, and prepare a portfolio of results. |

Specific Methods of Evaluation: Evaluation of student progress towards achieving stated learning outcomes and performance objectives is the responsibility of the instructor within policies of the college and the department. Detailed explanation is included in the expanded syllabus developed by the instructor for each section being taught. Tests will be given which contain questions covering the content of the class/text. Homework and projects will be assigned. Class participation (attendance). Final Test of Success. |

instructor to accomplish the objectives specified in the course syllabus.
However, circumstances may arise which prohibit the fulfilling of this
endeavor. Therefore, this syllabus is subject to change. When possible,
