We can do it. But should we?
Trying on new genes
Pensacola Junior College is embarking on the
“Bioethics: Science and Human Values” project for the 2007-2008 academic year.
The goal is to challenge the PJC community and greater Pensacola community to
explore the complexities of bioethics – how it relates to academic disciplines
and affects individuals. The intention is to present facts, information,
cultural attitudes and points of view to get people thinking and talking – not
provide definite answers and solutions. The Bioethics Committee is planning a
variety of events and materials including debates, a film series, a bibliography
of LRC materials, suggested reading lists, guest speakers, etc. Regularly check
the Web site for articles, podcasts and information relating to bioethics and
human values.
What is bioethics?
This is not Plato’s bioethics.
Today, it is the people’s bioethics, and it is center court of
public debate.
Hot topics include drug testing, organ donation, cloning, embryo research, stem
cell research, genetic engineering, in vitro fertilization, abortion, DNA data
banking, patient care, living wills and assisted suicide. And the terrain keeps
broadening, encompassing the environmental, population, social sciences,
philosophy and theology.
Bioethics focuses on maintaining respect for the individual in light of
expanding technology and its applications. Many experts say it’s “the”
discipline of the 21st century.
